Make it Monday: Cereal Box File Tray

Here is a really cheap, simple "file tray." I know it's not fancy, but it's functional and cost me a roll of duct tape. And not even that b/c I didn't use the whole roll--not even half! The cereal boxes I don't count, since I'd have those anyway. I just saved these from the dumpster. :-D
So, did you know that you can get duct tape in all kinds of pretty colors and designs now? Not just the dull silver that's been around forever. So, first thing you want to do is pick out a design you like. As you can see, I favored the blue with white flowers. You can also get it in sheets, by the way (the size of a normal piece of paper). But I found the roll to be the more practical and versatile option.
Besides the tape, you will need empty cereal boxes and scissors. I have for boxes in the pic here, but decided to just do three.

First, you will want to trim the boxes so that they are the same length. Next, you will start wrapping tape around the boxes to hold them together.

Repeat this step until the whole box is covered. I didn't actually cover the back or the bottom. I figured those parts wouldn't be visible, so why waste the tape? But you can do that if you want to!

And there you have a cheap, simple file tray. Nothing fancy. Maybe something you don't want to show company. Maybe close friends who know how quirky and frugal you are. :-P Maybe one day I'll venture to make a lid for it for storage. I'll be sure to let you know when I do.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 21

victorianchristmas - 29

Since I'm doing my 25 Days of Christmas post so close to the holidays, I thought it would be helpful for me to make a few suggestions for last minute gifts. And not only can you get them together last minute, many people already have a lot of these items at home.
Obviously I can't promise that you have these things, but I know I keep a lot of these things around, so you might too.

Brown Sugar Scrub
This makes a great gift for the girls and ladies in your life that need a little pampering. Sugar scrubs leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.
Items needed: brown sugar, some kind of oil and optional vanilla extract

Homemade Bath Salts
Along the same lines as the sugar scrub, a lovely bath salt blend can work on sore muscles.
Items needed: Epsom salt, kosher or sea salt, optional scents and colors.

Personalized Mugs
This one is super easy and be a gift for anyone old enough to handle a glass mug! Fill it with a small bag of coffee or homemade hot chocolate.
Items needed: White cup, sharpie marker

Homemade Playdough
This one's for the kids. I don't what kid doesn't like playing with playdough! if you have a few cookie cutters to spare, add them in and make it a kit. ;-)
Items needed: flour, oil, salt, water, cream of tartar, food coloring

I know these may not hit everybody on the list, but these are just a few ideas for when you need to get something together real quick. Homemade goodies are also a big hit, especially for the guys, and Sonya, our host has a great post on mixes in a jar on her blog, Parga's Junkyard.

And now for today's awesome giveaway. It is a set of Nielson-Massey vanilla flavorings and cookbook. I love baking, so I use lots of vanilla. You can read a review of these here. Then you can enter using the rafflecopter form below@ Good luck!

Get Fresh with Charmin Freshmates #FreshmatesClean

Okay, this might be a little TMI, but I just have to say I love Charmin. Forever I was always getting the cheapest brand of bath tissue, but when I finally tried out Charmin Ultra Strong bath tissue after combing a slae with a coupon, I didn't want to but anything else. In fact, I always get annoyed when DH buys the TP, because he gets the cheaper stuff and it's not as good a quality.
but I digress. what i'm really here to talk about is Charmin Freshmates, which are Charmin's flushable wipes appropriate for children and adults alike. Sometimes you just need a little something more to leave you feeling fresh.
Vocalpoint was kind enough to send me a full-size tub of freshmates along with this towel, which I thought was kinda funny. Even though it says "face" and "tush" which makes me think it's supposed to be a body towel, it seems a little stiff to me and I think it makes a great towel for putting on the floor for when you get out of the shower.

As for the Charmin freshmates, I have to say since I have a potty-training toddler, they are great for that. They work like a wipe, but you can flush them. A little moisture is very helpful when your kid can't wipe themselves to well!
My only gripe with the Charmin freshmates is that they seem to dry out a little too easily. But that can be fixed by adding some water to the tub.

And now, through December 31, Charmin is running a sweepstakes where the grand prize is a $5,000 bathroom makeover and there are 42 daily winners of a tub of Freshmates. Go here for details on how to enter!

*I received the above mentioned products from Vocalpoint. All opinions are my own.*

Stringing popcorn and cranberries for our Christmas tree has been a tradition my entire life. We have done it to bring the family closer and to save money in decorating. Christmas Trees: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly & the HUH?
The Christmas Tree is probably the most iconic image of Christmas. Every year millions of people all in the United States, Europe, Australia, and other parts of the world either dig out that dusty old faux tree, cut down a fresh one, and sometimes even invent their own! I remember my Grandma Ann did a different theme every year...one year she just had 2 columns of faux white pine leaves with all pink tinsel and ornaments. Throughout the years she had many different themes, some good and some outlandish...but always full of Christmas cheer. I scoured the Internet to bring you some of the best in show, worst in show, and everything in between...of Christmas trees. Get inspired or see what not to do! Read the whole post here.

Do You Need a Daily Break?

Have you signed up for Smiley 360 yet? If you haven't, you should know it's a really fun way to get to try new things. All they ask in return is that you spread the word about the products you try. And if it's a product you really like, you want to tell others about it anyway, right?
So, the latest "mission" I've gotten from Smiley lately is to try out a trivia site called Daily Break that also offers drawings for prizes when you play various trivia games. I know, hard stuff right?
Well, it just so happens that I'm a sucker for trivia games. I just love testing my knowledge and learning new stuff. I'm full of random "useless" knowledge, as my husband jokingly calls it. I'm not saying I spend hours every day on it--maybe once a week or so for a few minutes. But it's a nice little "daily break." :-)

Guess Moo! iPad App Review

I was recently provided access to an app called "Guess Moo" via Tomoson.com. This is a learning app targeted at young children and teaches about common animals and the sounds they make. When the child taps an animal, a short poem featuring that animal pops up.
For example, when the rooster pops up, there is a poem that reads:

Every morning is so much fun.
I shout for joy when I see the sun.

There is also a voice that reads the poem out loud, because in general, the app's target audience doesn't know how to read. However, the words in the poems are simple enough that they make good "sight" words, and it might be helpful for the parent to point to each word as it is being said so the child can make the association.

There is music which you can turn on or off. My daughter likes it on. :-/ It kinda gets on your nerves after a few minutes. And the music is non-stop. It doesn't stop when you push on the animal and it goes to the little poem.
There is also a short quiz you can do. You listen to the animal sound, then choose which of four animals makes that noise. If you're right it says "uh huh" and if you're not it says "uh uh." I think it would be better if it it said "Yes, you're right!" or "No, that's not it." I think it would be easier for kids to understand.
If they get a perfect score on the quiz, they get to play a "bonus" game in which they get t pop balloons floating to the top of the screen. Then there is some victory music.
Other than the somewhat unclear "uh huhs" and "uh uhs" in the quiz, it is a pretty good learning app. I think it has the right amount of animals for young children and is pretty easy to understand. I know my daughter really likes it!

*I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Outburst Energy Bites

As a mom of a toddler and an infant, I am always in need of ways to increase my energy. And, I really, really like chocolate, as I'm sure my regular readers know. ;-) So I was excited when I recently got the opportunity through tomoson.com to try out Outburst Energy Bites.
Outburst Energy Bites are little chocolate candies that contain caffeine. Four candies are equivelent to a cup of coffee. So, you get a pick-me-up and a little sweet tooth satisfaction at the same time. Pretty cool, huh? And it's about 50 calories, so not too horrible. You can suck on them instead of chew them to make them last longer. ;-)

Outburst Engery Bites come in 3 flavors--plain chocolate (brown), chocolate peanut (yellow) and chocolate mint (mint). All flavors I love in general. My favorite flavor here was probably the chocolate peanut.

Do they work? Well, I like to think they work somewhat. I try taking them earlier in the day and I don't feel like I'm in such a "slump" in the afternoon. I'm not bouncing off the walls or anything--boy wouldn't that kind of energy be great--but I feel slightly more energized. Everyone's body will respond differently though. So my experience may not be yours.
If anyone would like to try Outburst Energy Bites, the company is offering my readers a BOGO coupon on the sampler packs. Just put in the coupon code ORDHOUSE at checkout. :-)
Outburst Energy Bites come in small little packages, easy to put in your purse for an afternoon pick-me-up! Just make sure your children don't get ahold of them! As with any caffeine product, these candies are not for children, pregnant women or anyone with caffeiene sensitivities.

*I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.*

Weight Loss Wednesday: Fiber One 90 Calorie Brownies

So, today I'm going to tell you about a high fiber, pretty low calorie snack. You've probably heard about these before, but if you haven't, they are decent.
I'm not gonna lie and tell you these taste as good as the real thing. But when you want another option when the "real thing" isn't one, you might wanna give it a shot.
They are only 90 calories and have 5 grams of fiber. Now, you know I'm all about the fiber, right? Getting enough fiber and drinking enough water can be a great boost to your weight loss, even without a lot of other alterations to your lifestyle.
The 90 Calorie Fiber One brownie now comes in chocolate chip flavor. I think I almost like it better than the regular kind. Although that one is decent too.
Most people don't get enough fiber. Women should aim for about 25 grams a day, men 30-35. While most of your fiber should come from whole foods, I can't hurt to have a little help. And it might as well taste good, right?

Get Unjunked with Unreal Candy

How do you feel about chocolate? Love it? How do you feel about artificial flavoring and high fructose syrup? Not so much, huh? Well, what if you could get chocolate without all the "junk"? Well, now you can, if you try Unreal candy.
I got the chance to try some through BzzAgent. I got a free coupon and a few BOGO's. I decided to get one of each, so I could get the full experience. ;-) Here my collection.

The first flavor I tried was the Unreal 41, which is their version of M&M's. Now, I will tell you right off, these are not quite as sweet as M&M's, as they do have less sugar, as well as more fiber and protein per serving. They would take some getting used to as a replacement. But they aren't bad. These were my hubby's favorite.

What I liked better was the Unreal 54, which is the peanut version. Maybe it was the strong flavor of the peanuts. But I just really liked this combo.

Another one I really like was Unreal 77. Basically peanut butter cups. now, I'm not gonna say I loved these more than Reese's, but they were quite good. Probably a good tie with 54 as my favorite of this bunch.

Finally, there is Unreal 5 and Unreal 8. These are sort of like Milky Way and Snickers, respectively. As with the others, I liked the peanut-ty version best. The nougat was rather stiff to me, and not as creamy as the standard candy bars. Normally I love Milky Way bars, but this I didn't care for so much. I did like the Unreal 8 pretty well, though.

So, in conclusion, the only way for you to decide if these are really for you is to try one yourself. Like I said earlier, these candy bars have no atrificials, no HFC, no hydrogenated oil, more protein and fiber and less sugar. So they are all natural and over all better for you. Not that you should make a habit of eating these, but for an occassional treat.
If you are used to the regular candy bars, these would probably take some getting used to. Also, they are a little more expensive. Almost double what you can get the others for at a good price. Also, these are only available at select retailers for now, like Michaels, CVS, Wlagreens, and Kroger.
They probably won't replace my other chocolate, but I'd say they're probably worth a try!

*I received a free sample of this product via BzzAgent. Any opinions expressed are my own.*

Trucks and Things That Go (Product Review)

As a member of Karma Media, I (or I should say my daughter) recently got the opportunity to try out "Trucks and Things That Go," a children's app for the iPad or iPhone, which teaches children about different types of vehicles.
There are different "categories," like water vehicles, trains or vehicles you would find in the park. The game mainly consists of dragging the vehicles into the matching shadows. In the pic below, you can see my daughter trying to drag one of the trains into its shadow.

And here's a right-side-up view of her dragging a boat into place.

The app description says it is for toddlers and my daughter is 2 1/2. While she was excited to start playing at first, it did not keep her entertained as long as I was hoping. Also, I feel like the vehicles had to be a little too precisely placed for a "toddler." You have to place it almost exactly within the line for it to be accepted and give the next vehicle.
For example, in the pic above, the position  of the boat in relation to the shadow, would not be close enough to "take." I think if it is that close, it should be accepted--especially if this app is designed for "toddlers."
Perhaps when my daughter is a little older and is better able to precisely place the vehicles, she will be able to get more out of it. It is a great concept, as young kids love vehicles. I just wish it was easier for young children to place the vehicles.
"Trucks and Things That Go" is an app from Kids 1st Shape Puzzle which offers all kinds of early childhood games. I may look into some of those to see if they are more entertaining for my daughter.
And here's a picture of my daughter, getting ready to play!

*I received this product through Karma Media in exchange for my honest review.*
