Make Your own Sodas with Soda Sparkle

I recently had the opportunity to try out this really cool gadget called a Soda Sparkle. It is one of those make-your-own-soda machines that you keep hearing about. It actually carbonates the water for you, then you add your own flavor. It's really neat, actually.

I got the twin bottle kit, which means i can have two carbonated bottles of water at once, if I want to. In the pic above, you can see the main bottle with the soda mechanism screwed in. There is also a box of 5 chargers (this is what gives the water its fizz), 15 assorted flavor packets, a lid, for storing after you're done making the soda, and the thing on the far right screws onto the rest of the machine and this is really the key to the magic, because that is the gadget you put your charger into and twist onto the other part and then the fun begins.
The carbonation is done in a few seconds, but it is pretty cool to watch. The bubbles settle down, but fizz back up when you remove the top. Then you pour the amount you want into a glass and add your flavor packet. We tried the apple and cola-lemon first.

I think maybe we used too much water because the flavor seemed a little weaker than it should. I think it would be better to have a bottle of flavoring so you can add what you want. You could probably add other flavored syrups, or even Koolaid to it to make a fun fruity drink. I have not tried this yet.
There are several benefits to a gadget like this. One, you would use less bottle. This is assuming, of course, that you drink a lot of soda in the first place. Once you make the initial investment of the machine, you can get a pack of 50 chargers for about $25, which makes it roughly 50 cents a charge. And since you could probably get at least 4 servings out of a charge, it's about 12-13 cents a drink, plus flavoring. The best deal on their flavoring (which are natural flavors) is $20 for 60 packets (about 33 cents a piece). So that would make it 45 cents a drink--still cheaper than a can of soda.
While Soda Sparkle offers a few flavors, all of which are natural, you also have the ability to add your own natural juices, so you can know exactly what is in your drink, which is another great benefit. Also, it is not super-bulky. It only takes up as much space as a 2 liter soda bottle.
This is a really fun product with benefits both for your health and the enviroment. And they've got new flavors in the making, so if you don't see your favorite flavor now, there's still a chance it will come.
If you have family coming for the holidays, this would be something fun to show off for kids and adults alike. It would also make a great gift. ;-)
